Work Experience for Immigrants Program
This full-time program assists skilled immigrants to:
• Learn the strategies to successfully find a job
• Have an opportunity to earn a Canadian work experience reference utilizing the qualifications and experience gained in their countries of origin
• Improve their English language skills for the Canadian workplace
Program Description
This full-time program starting at 8 a.m. Monday to Friday will provide you with:
• 10 weeks of intensive employment related training for skilled immigrants who have English as a Second Language
• 6 weeks of unpaid work experience (not guaranteed)
• Job search client support for 6 months after completion of the program
Program Dates (2006 – 2007):
Sep. 5, 2006 – Dec. 22, 2006 Nov. 14, 2006 – Mar. 16, 2007 Feb. 5, 2007 – Jun. 1, 2007 Apr. 23, 2007 – Aug. 10, 2007
Costs: There is no charge for applicants admitted to this program. Selected applicants are responsible for transportation costs and a Bow Valley College student ID card.
Client Eligibility
• Legally entitled (e.g. Canadian citizen, Landed Immigrant) to work and train in Canada
• A skilled immigrant, resident of Canada for 10 years or less
• An Alberta resident living in Calgary
• Unemployed or employed less than 20 hours per week (out of field) and having difficulty finding employment in your occupational field
• Have Canadian Language Benchmarks of five to eight AND be ineligible for Language Instruction for New Canadians (LINC) training
• Need Canadian/Alberta work experience to enter your occupational field
• Need English training to secure employment
• Have work experience in your country of origin and desire to enter that occupational field in Canada
You can be
• Receiving Employment Insurance (EI)
• Receiving Alberta Works Income support (IS) benefits
• Eligible for EI Reachback
Program Content
During the first ten weeks of the program you will be involved in an intensive, participatory, classroom setting. You will learn about:
• Obstacles that you must overcome in order to gain employment
• Adjusting to a new culture and how culture shock affects immigrants
• Self awareness
• The importance of networking
• Networking as a source of job leads
• Understanding Calgary’s corporate culture
• The art of negotiation
• Interpersonal communication skills
• Résumé and cover-letter writing
• Language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
• Development of vocabulary through the study of idioms
• Computer skills (improving e-mail communication, the use of the Internet for job-search purposes and MS Office applications)
• Development of note-taking skills
• Short- and long-term goal setting
• Conducting a business meeting
• Interviewing skills
• Job-maintenance skills
• Stress-management skills
• Workplace essential skills
Also, you have access to 102 courses in the BVC eLearning Library for one year from the date of your acceptance into the program.
During the last six (6) weeks of the program, participate in a work experience placement that takes advantage of your education and work history from your country of origin. You are not paid for this placement, but you are able to include this experience on your resume. The hours that you work in this unpaid position depend on the host company’s normal work hours.
Program Schedule
Weeks 1 – 10: 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Weeks 11 – 16: according to host company’s normal work hours
Application Procedures
Applicants must pick up an application package at the Registrar’s Office at Bow Valley College and attend an Application Session. The Registrar’s Office (403) 410-1400) is located at 2nd Floor, 332 – 6th Avenue SE, Calgary and is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
